background
The 2022
Chevrolet
Colorado midsize pickup truck has a variety of trim levels and powertrains to satisfy just about anyone. However, the reviews so far on this versatile truck are mixed. While some think it needs a design overhaul, there are some
trim levels
and powertrain selections that have quite a lot to offer.
The latest review from
Car and Driver
calls the newest Colorado rugged, maneuverable, and comfortable, with certain powertrains and trim levels providing more to the consumer, but with a lacking interior and tech features. Let’s dig into it!

What are the powertrain options?

The smallest engine option is the four-cylinder powertrain with a six-speed automatic transmission. Moving up, the 3.6-liter six-cylinder features an eight-speed automatic transmission that produces 308 hp. The diesel option is a 2.8-liter, four-cylinder transmission that offers 369 lb-ft of torque.
The diesel and the V6 options have received lots of praise for their zip, but the base level four-cylinder comes across as extremely lackluster.
The V6 LT model hits 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. The diesel option is a bit slower at 9.1 seconds, but it may come out on top for its higher towing capacity, its off-road capabilities, and its better fuel economy.

What do the features look like?

One of the Colorado’s best features is its roomy front seats, but since it is a midsize truck, the rear seating is a bit more cramped. The half-ton Chevy Silverado 1500 might be more up your alley if you’re looking for roomy rear seating.
Some of the biggest criticisms of this truck are that the design and the materials of the interior feel like they haven’t been updated in decades. It isn’t a posh, swanky, techy-feeling cockpit, though it is a solid, conventional truck. There is great storage inside the cabin, and tons of storage space in the pickup’s bed, which is among the most spacious in its class.
Infotainment screens have become ubiquitous in new cars, and the Colorado hits the mark with theirs. A nice-sized screen, the truck offering 7- and 8-inch options, with all the usual and expected offerings graces the front dash.
One of the biggest critiques of the Colorado is its basic list of tech-based safety features. It does have rear parking sensors available, lane-departure warnings, and forward-collision warnings. However, It doesn’t offer an option of radar-assisted cruise control, parking assist, driver attention monitors, rain-sensor wipers, blind-spot monitors, automatic high beams…and the list goes on.
The only update for 2022 Colorado is the new dealer-installed Trail Boss Off-Road package available on the LT and Z71 trim levels. This package offers 17-inch black wheels, black badges, skid plates, a suspension lift, and red tow hooks.
Now, if you bump up to the ZR2 trim level, you will get more features like heated mirrors, a bed liner, tons of exterior style, and a truck already equipped with an off-road package. It may not be the most affordable Colorado trim level, but it certainly offers the most.

Which one should you buy?

Due to the lack of interior quality on the lower trim levels, MotorTrend recommends the ZR2 with a crew cab as the Colorado truck most worth buying.
They explained, “Sure, it's the most expensive trim level, but it has a host of exclusive equipment that includes exotic spool-valve shocks, electronic locking differentials on both axles, and one of the wilder front ends we've seen on a modern truck.”
So, what is the answer to our original question? It all comes down to what you’re looking for in a truck. If you are searching for a conventional, somewhat basic, rugged mid-size pickup, it definitely could be a great investment.
