background
In
Florida
, the only situations where you’re required to get a vehicle inspection are when you purchase a new car outside the state or if you purchase a used car within the state.
Since 1977, all states have been required to implement vehicle emissions inspection programs to bring air quality up to federal standards. Emissions inspections are required by law in some states, while others leave inspection up to the consumer.
Compared to other states, Florida’s rules for vehicle inspections are extremely lenient. To help you navigate these regulations, we've compiled a guide to help you understand Florida’s vehicle inspection requirements.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍

What are the vehicle inspection requirements in Florida?

For the most part, vehicle inspections in Florida are voluntary
Although the state instituted a short-lived emissions inspection program in the 1990s, former governor Jeb Bush abolished all emissions testing requirements in 2000 to save both individuals and the state time and money.
Because the state still meets federal Clean Air standards, neither emissions nor safety testing is mandatory for drivers in Florida.
The only type of inspection required by Florida is a
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and Odometer Verification
. You must have this inspection completed by a Florida Licensed Dealer, law enforcement officer, military police officer, or Florida compliance examiner/inspector (Division of Motorist Services/tax collector employee) in the following situations:
  • If you are purchasing a new vehicle outside the state of Florida
  • If you are purchasing a used vehicle in Florida
Submit the form to your local tax collector office to have it verified.
