Why is my engine oil light blinking?

My engine oil light recently turned on and started flashing, which I’ve never seen before. How serious is this? Why is my engine oil light blinking?

A blinking or flashing engine oil warning light could be connected to a number of oil-related problems in your vehicle, including:
  • Low oil levels
  • Low oil pressure
  • Oil needs to be changed
  • Wrong
    engine oil
    used
  • Leaking oil
  • Faulty oil pressure sensor
  • Faulty oil pressure gauge
  • Dirty oil filter
Keep in mind: Some of the issues listed above are less urgent or easy fixes, like topping off your oil. Others—like using the wrong engine oil—are more serious, and will need to be addressed promptly to avoid costly damage to your engine.
At any rate, it would be a good idea to take your vehicle to a mechanic as soon as possible so you can find out what the issue is.
