I have to drive up some steeper hills on my way to work everyday, and my car is having problems. When I put it in 5th gear, my car loses power on the hills. Why does my car lose power in 5th gear?

You may need to downshift to a lower gear when you’re driving on hills, depending on just how steep they are. The engine speed needs to stay at or above 2000 rpm—if it dips below this speed, the car will start to lose power.
If you try that and your car is still losing power, it may have one of the following issues and you should take it to a mechanic so they can diagnose the problem:

  • Bad spark plugs
  • Clogged exhaust manifold
  • Clogged fuel filter
