However, Honda and other carmakers commonly assign LX to base trims, like the Honda Civic LX or Honda CR-V LX. Ironically, these are not the most luxurious models offered.

Differences between car trim levels
The term trim refers to a particular subtype of a car model. While designations like hatchback, sedan, and coupe refer to the physical design of the model, trim usually refers to the features a model includes (like leather seats and remote start), as well as the available options or packages a model offers (like a premium sound system or tech package).
While you might expect the LX to be a higher-level trim, that’s not always the case. In fact, Honda uses LX to refer to base models of the Honda Civic, Honda CR-V, and Honda Accord. In its defense, base-model Hondas are decently luxurious!
Standard features on these models include the Honda Sensing safety suite, an audio system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, LED exterior lights, and a 7-inch color infotainment touchscreen.
LX has been used as a lower-level trim by the likes of Ford, as well. The third-generation Ford Mustang coupe had an LX trim. Kia and Mazda have used LX as a base or second-tier trim level designation, too.
Meanwhile, Lexus has an SUV model called the LX. And Chrysler has used LX to refer to its rear-wheel-drive trims, like on the Pacifica LX.
How car manufacturers name trim levels
Much of the way trim levels are named has to do with tradition. Carmakers often select abbreviations that have long been in use in the automotive world.
The abbreviation GT is a great example—it stands for Grand Touring. The grand touring car originated in the 1950s as a type of luxury sports car that could travel long distances. Years later it was used to designate the performance-level Ford Mustang.
LE and SE are other common trim names. These usually represent Special Edition or Limited Edition models ( although Toyota’s LE stands for Luxury Edition).

Common trim designations
Most car manufacturers have a long list of trims. It’s anyone’s guess how they come up with some of them.
Going from least expensive to most, Toyota likes to use L, LE, SE, XLE, XSE, and Limited as some of their trim names. Chevy likes to use L, LS, LT, and Premier to designate trim levels for their SUVs like the Equinox.

European manufacturers like BMW often like to use codes as trim names, including short-form designations representing the included engine or drivetrain. For example, the BMW X3 sDrive30i is the base level 2022 X3, which comes with the standard 30i 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. sDrive (as opposed to xDrive) refers to the front-wheel-drive powertrain.
You’ll often see full words as trim names, too. Jeep is a great example of a company that likes to get creative with its trims. For example, 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited trims include the Sport, Willys Sport, Sport S, Sport Altitude, Willys, Sahara, Sport RHD, Rubicon, Sahara Altitude, High Tide, High Altitude, or Rubicon 392. That’s a lot of options!
