Which Mercedes have biodegradable wiring?

I was thinking about buying a vintage Mercedes, and a buddy told me that they used to have biodegradable wiring. This seems wild since you don’t want your wiring degrading over time, right? And which Mercedes-Benz models have biodegradable wiring?

This does seem a little wild when you first hear it! Totally understand your concern.
What actually happened with the Mercedes biodegradable wiring issue was that the brand’s parts supplier, Delphi, made some parts (including electric wiring harnesses) using biodegradable materials because of government mandates at the time. Mercedes didn’t know this would become an issue until much later when the cars were no longer under warranty.
You should avoid
Mercedes
models from the years 1993 to 1996 to dodge the biodegradable wiring issue. Most models in these years were affected, and although it’s possible to find some V8 models without the faulty wiring, it’s risky. Choose a Mercedes outside of this range, and you should be good to go!
