Where can you sleep in your car in Los Angeles?

I’m staying in Los Angeles for a couple of nights while traveling along the west coast and hotel rooms are just absurdly expensive. Where can I sleep in my car while I’m in LA?

The answer is a little complicated since the law is frequently changing in Los Angeles. That being said, police officers are not allowed to bother you for sleeping in your car in Los Angeles as long as you’re at least 500 feet away from residences or school zones.
Check Section 85.02 of the Los Angeles Municipal Code for updated laws on vehicle dwelling. Some popular spots to post up for the night include the following:
  • Walmart or other shopping centers that are open 24 hours
  • Public parking areas
  • Highway rest stops
Depending on the current state of the law, many law enforcement officers will just ask you to leave if they find you sleeping in your car rather than writing you a ticket. It’s smart to just be respectful and move on in this situation.
