What is a rectangular-shaped road sign?

What is the significance of a rectangularly-shaped road sign? I’m going to take my test next week and I know that road sign shapes can mean different things, but I’m confused about the rectangular ones.

Good luck with your test! The answer to this question actually depends on which way the sign is oriented:
  • If the sign is a vertical rectangle shape, then it’s a regulatory sign—these may display rules like the speed limit or they give directions, such as Keep Right or No Turn on Red
  • If the sign is a horizontal rectangle shape, it will provide information about an area, including nearby rest stops or gas stations,
    roadside attractions
    , or places to eat.
You must obey vertical rectangular signs, but horizontal ones are not necessary for driving and simply help you find services that you may need.
