My mother recently passed away. I’m trying to figure out her affairs and it looks like she had an active home insurance policy. What happens to home insurance after someone dies?

I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. I’m sure it’s difficult trying to get her affairs in order. A home insurance policy will need to be canceled when someone dies.
If you’re the executor of your mother’s will, you’ll need to contact her

company to let them know she has passed away. From there, the company may request a death certificate. If your mother had a mortgage and you’re planning to keep the home, you’ll likely have to maintain home insurance on the house. When you speak to the insurance company, find out what their policy is. Some insurance companies allow policies to stay active for the remainder of the policy period, while others only give you 30 days to get a new policy.
