What happens if you fail your driving test 3 times?
I just took my driving test for the second time and failed again. I scheduled another test, but I’m really worried now. What will happen if I fail my driving test 3 times?

It’s always a bummer when you have to retake your driving test, but don’t lose hope! You still have a chance to get your license, even if you end up failing your third test.
Licensing procedures vary state-to-state, but often if you fail the driving test three times, you’ll need to restart the licensing process.
Typically, this means you need to:
- Apply for a new permit
- Retake the written test for a fee
- Reschedule the driving test for a fee
Some states only require a fee for extra tests beyond the second failure. Other states may impose a wait period before you can either reapply or retest. Check with your state’s DMV to see what the consequences may be—you’ll most likely just be looking at putting in more time and money toward future attempts.
