Chances are that you’ll need to open the hood on your Honda CR-V at one point or another. Whether you’re getting routine maintenance like an
oil change
or a more extensive
car repair,
opening the hood is often the first step. But that doesn’t always mean it’s an obvious step to perform!
That’s why we’ve put together this guide to the Honda CR-V hood release. We’ll cover where to find it, how to use it, and even whether or not your
car insurance
will cover it if it needs to be repaired. Let’s pop the hood and take a look, shall we?

Where is the hood release on a Honda CR-V?

The hood release on a Honda CR-V is located beneath the dashboard on the left-hand side of the driver’s side seating area.
The hood release lever can be a little tricky to find, as it’s usually tucked away in the inner kick panel near the brake pedal. Look for a tiny black lever with the picture of a car with its hood open on it. This is the first lever that you’ll need to pull when you’re trying to open the hood of your car.
There is a secondary hood release handle located on the underside of your Honda CR-V hood. You can usually find this by feeling around inside the hood after you’ve pulled the primary hood release. This lever is responsible for releasing the hood safety latch.

How to open the hood on a Honda CR-V

Once you’ve found the hood release lever in your Honda CR-V you can easily
open the hood of your car
. Just follow these steps:
  1. Pull the hood release lever located inside your Honda CR-V until you hear the hood pop open.
  2. Slide your hand between the lip of the hood and the front grille until you find the secondary hood release lever.
  3. Pull the hood release lever to release the safety latch and push the hood up.
  4. Locate the prop rod inside your car hood and pull it up, inserting the tip into a notch on the underside of your hood.
Now that your car hood is unlatched and propped open, you can get to work on whatever you need to do! However, that may prove difficult if your hood release lever doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to.

What if the hood release latch doesn’t work?

If you don’t hear the hood pop when you pull on the hood release latch, chances are you’ve got a broken hood latch release cable on your hands. You can still open the hood on your Honda CR-V, but you’ll need a little help from a flathead screwdriver and a flashlight.
Look for the hood latch through the front grille of your CR-V, right above the Honda insignia. The hood latch cable typically attaches to the right side of the release lever. Take your flathead screwdriver below the right side of the release lever and push up til the latch releases. Then finish opening the safety latch of the hood per usual.

How to repair the Honda CR-V hood release

Whether your hood release cable is broken or you need to
replace your Honda CR-V hood latch
, you’re likely better off having the repair done by a seasoned mechanic. These parts can be tricky to fix on your own without a good amount of automotive experience.
The replacement costs for these services are relatively the same—about $175 to $225. A Honda dealership will use OEM auto parts, but you’ll likely have to pay more for them if the repair isn’t covered under warranty. You can save a bit if you go to an independent mechanic, although you may not need to if you have
OEM coverage
on your car insurance policy.
You may also be able to use
collision coverage
to pay for a new hood latch if it was damaged in a fender bender or other type of car accident. If your insurance policy doesn’t include any additional coverages, however, you’ll be left paying for the repairs out of pocket.
