What happens if someone hits my parked car and I don't call the police?

Last week, a driver hit my parked car. He didn’t drive off and I was outside when it happened. We decided not to call the police and that he’d pay me for the damages. Now he’s dodging me. What happens if a motorist hits my car and I decide not to call the police?

You can still call the police to file a police report. Some states give you years to file a police report, and you’re going to need one to file a successful claim to repair the damage to your car.
You should always file a police report. In a perfect world, you could take people at their word, but many people will do whatever they can to skirt responsibility, especially if money is involved.
You may be able to file a claim on your car insurance under your
uninsured/underinsured motorist policy
or your
comprehensive coverage
. Just note that your rates will increase.
If your rates go up, use the
