What does the Drivetrain Error message in my BMW mean?

Yesterday I saw a warning message on my BMW’s display saying “Drivetrain Error.” I’m not really sure what that means, but it seems serious. Should I be worried?

The Drivetrain Error message in your
BMW
means that the car encountered a problem involving either the engine or the transmission.
Sadly, this is as specific as the message is, and unfortunately, it is all too common in BMWs. To get a more detailed report, you’ll need to use a BMW scanner or take it to a BMW dealership.
This message could be due to a severe problem in the drivetrain, or it could be just a momentary hiccup from driving on steep terrain. BMWs are known to flash this message when driving up steep inclines or if the transmission is struggling for some reason.
Many BMW owners choose to buy a BMW scanner—so they can check the details of the message themselves and save time and money from repeated trips to the mechanic.
