What does a Ford extended warranty cover?

I recently purchased a brand spanking new Ford pickup truck. Since I’m as proud of my truck as I am of my own children (if not more so), I want to protect my new rig for the long haul. What does a Ford extended warranty cover?

A Ford extended warranty, or its series of Ford Protect Extended Service Plans, can provide up to 8 years of coverage or 150,000 miles driven, depending on which extended warranty you choose.
These extended warranties cover mostly components that fail or break due to defective materials or subpar workmanship; Ford’s PremiumCARE extended warranty also covers wear and tear.
So, why buy a Ford extended warranty in the first place? Well, a Ford new vehicle limited warranty lasts for 3 years or 36,000 miles, which is solid but doesn’t exactly last forever. If you’re more confident that your new Ford pickup will do a better job of upholding your good name than your own kids (and that’s saying something), you might want some added protection.
Ford’s Protect Extended Service Plans come in four tiers, as follows:
  • PremiumCARE: The top-tier Ford extended warranty, PremiumCARE extends your limited warranty’s coverage of more than 1,000 components, including the engine, transmission, steering, brakes, and more ($1,515)
  • ExtraCARE: ExtraCARE covers 113 components including near-full coverage for steering and brake systems and partial coverage of the engine, transmission, and air-conditioning systems ($1,275)
  • BaseCARE: BaseCARE gets you covered for 84 components including full coverage of the steering system, and partial coverage for the engine, transmission, seals, and gaskets ($1,105)
  • PowertrainCARE: Covers 29 parts, including limited coverage of the engine, transmission, front-wheel and rear-wheel drive systems
Each tier of extended warranty can carry a term up to 8 years and/or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Headlights, windshield wiper blades, and brake pads are not covered by Ford’s extended warranty plans.
