What do you do if your seat belt is not retracting?

I tried to buckle up in my car today, but the seat belt wasn’t working right. It was too loose and wouldn’t retract enough. What do you do if your seat belt is not retracting?

This is one of the most common problems with seat belts, but the good news is that it’s usually an easy fix!
If the seat belt in your
car
isn’t retracting, there are two probable causes: the belt is twisted, or the retractor is malfunctioning. You’ll be able to fix the belt yourself, but you’ll need to replace the retractor if it’s malfunctioning.
For a twisted seat belt, follow these steps to fix it at home:
  • Unbuckle to create slack and feed the belt in backward
  • Slowly pull out the belt until it’s fully extended
  • Inspect the belt for twists
  • Remove paneling if you can’t find any problems in the earlier steps
If you follow these steps and still have problems with the seat belt, you may want to take your car to an expert. For your car insurance, the experts at
