What are the penalties for a fake insurance card in Ohio?

My partner has been using a fake insurance card in Ohio for almost a year now because he thinks insurance is overpriced. I keep telling him he’s going to get caught one day—if he does, what are the penalties?

Having valid car insurance is mandatory in every state, and if you’re caught with a fake insurance card in
Ohio
, you may be charged with insurance fraud and face penalties for driving without insurance.
On top of that, you’ll also have your license, vehicle plates, and registration suspended for a first offense. There is a $160 fee to get the plates back—a $100 reinstatement fee, a $50 compliance fee, and a $10 registrar service fee. For three to five years, the state also requires you to file an
SR-22
.
Any subsequent offenses are subject to harsher penalties, including:
  • $360 restoration fee for vehicle registration and license plates and $660 for third offense or more
  • License suspension for one year for a second offense and two years for a third or subsequent
  • Vehicle and license plates confiscated for 60 days for a second offense
  • Vehicle impounded and sold and five-year suspension on registering vehicles for third or subsequent offense
