How many minutes is 9 miles driving?

My parents set a 1 a.m. curfew for me, and they get mad when I’m late. I always try to be on time, but I have a hard time estimating how long the drive from my friend’s house should take. How long is a nine-mile drive in minutes?

Timing your drives can be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be! On average, nine miles driving should take between 10 to 15 minutes. Of course, the actual time depends on several factors.
If you and your friend live right off the freeway, the whole drive should only take about 10 minutes. That’s because freeways typically have a speed limit of 65 mph.
But if you and/or your friend live in residential areas with 25 mph speed limits, the trip could take closer to 20 minutes.
You can calculate how long your drive will take by doing the following:
  • Divide the distance of your trip by the speed limit.
  • Multiply your answer by 60 minutes or 1 hour, depending on whether you want your answer in minutes or hours.
Remember, nine miles could take even longer if it’s
rush hour
or you run into other problems on the road. Before leaving, check the traffic on your phone to make sure the route looks good.
