I’m heading into the mountains in a few weeks to spend time with some friends in a cabin. I think it’s required that all vehicles have snow chains in the spot we’re staying in, though. What are the best snow chains for a Toyota RAV4?

ultimately come down to your preferences, but you’ll need to make sure you have the correct chains for your tire size and drivetrain. It’s always a good idea to take a look at restrictions and guidelines for tire chains in your RAV4’s owner’s manual before you invest in any product, too. Here’s a rundown of the types of snow chains available to get you started:
- Basic cable chains: popular for their affordability and lower profile on the wheel well, these are ideal in lighter-duty snow, but won’t last more than a few trips. Many drivers use these as emergency backup chains.
- Quick-fit chains: feature a little more traction than basic cable chains, but maintain a similar low profile. Most quick-fit chains are easier to install than more conventional chain systems and have built-in tensioners that won’t need adjusting after installation.
- Link-fit chains: these are your classic, heavy-duty snow exploring chains. Built with wider, metal links, they can easily navigate all sorts of off-road terrain. They usually cost and weigh more, though, and can be more difficult to install and maintain as you drive.
Alternatively, you can also purchase
tire socks
for your RAV4 that will fit over your wheels to grant you greater traction. If you’re going to be driving in snow frequently, you may want to invest in snow tires, as well—especially since snow chains come with the risk of damaging your tires. Since you are required to install snow chains on your SUV for the trip, though, some popular brands to look into include Konig, Peerless (particularly their Super Z6 chains), and Glacier.
