I have a terrible fear of getting in a head-on accident. But my friend who’s a driving instructor told me that you can protect yourself with the 4 R’s of defensive driving. What are effective defensive driving strategies?

Your friend is right—driving defensively could save your life. Here are the 4 R’s of defensive driving:
- Read the road ahead. Always scan your surroundings for other motorists, as well as curves, uphill drives, or turns that are potentially hazardous.
- Drive to the right. Always drive in the right-most lane unless you’re passing someone and veer to the right if another car is coming directly toward you.
- Reduce your speed. If you notice an oncoming vehicle driving erratically, reducing your speed can help you avoid them. Moreover, driving at the speed limit or below it can give you more control.
- Ride off the road. If you’re forced off the road by an oncoming car, don’t slam the brakes. Instead, let your car roll while you go off the road. Pick the path of least resistance and only apply the brakes once you’re going slow enough to safely do so.
