I’ve got a job that requires lots of city driving—popping into different businesses, making sales, that sort of thing. I currently use a lot of gas, but I’d like to be more eco-friendly (and save some money in the process). What are some techniques I can use to get better gas mileage?

It’s great that you’re looking for ways to drive more efficiently, both for your savings account and for the environment! Without further ado, here are three eco-friendly driving techniques that will increase your gas mileage.
- Accelerate slowly: One of the biggest fuel-burning blunders is to press the pedal to the metal and lurch forward. While you might need to accelerate quickly every once in a while, your fuel efficiency will plummet if you do it too often.
- Keep your speed steady: Along the same lines, you should try to maintain a consistent speed, especially on the highway. Even minor fluctuations in speed (think 5-10 mph) can decrease your miles per gallon by as much as 20%. If you can use it safely, cruise control is your best friend!
- Optimize your driving route: Plan your stops carefully to make your route through the city as direct and traffic-free as possible. Since you’re swinging by lots of businesses, you could try to lay out your route before you leave each morning.
Follow these three steps, and voila! You should see your fuel efficiency climbing in no time.
