The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee: How do I put it in neutral?

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but when I tried to start it this morning, the engine wouldn’t start. It’s in my one-car garage, so I can’t readily get to the engine compartment and it won’t shift out of park. Is there a way to put it in neutral?

Here’s how to put a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a dead battery in neutral:
  1. Open the center console. You should see a plastic plate near the hinge.
  2. Lift this plate out. It should move easily. You should see a red or orange strap underneath.
  3. With your foot on the brake, pull on the strap to pull the lever and manually put your car in neutral.
