2005 Ford F150 5.4 engine oil capacity

The 5.4-liter V8 engine in your '05 F150 holds 7.0 quarts or 6.6 liters of motor oil
Before we move on, it's important to note the difference between your Ford's engine displacement and its oil capacity.
Engine displacement
refers to the total 5.4-liter volume of space that the engine's cylinders occupy. Oil capacity is the amount of oil the engine is capable of holding for lubrication purposes.
Engine displacement and oil capacity do not mean the same thing, and you should not use the two terms interchangeably.

What kind of oil does a 2005 Ford F150 5.4 take?

After learning your F150's oil capacity, you need to know its oil type. That's right—not all automotive oil is the same, and you'll need to fill your Ford with the proper type.
At the auto parts store, look for SAE 5W20 engine oil. That's the type of oil that your owner's manual recommends using in your 2005 Ford F150, and it's always a smart decision to use the manufacturer's recommendation.
But just what exactly does that code mean? Well, oil codes are actually fairly simple, and they help us identify the oil's intended use. Let's break it down.
The letters "SAE" symbolize the Society of Automotive Engineers. That's the group of scientists and industry pros responsible for assigning codes to automotive oil. And the numbers tell us how thick or viscous the oil is at opposite temperature ranges.
The first number in our code—" 5"—explains how thick the oil is when the motor is cold. You can easily remember this one because it's next to the letter "W," which means winter. The final number—" 20"—tells us how thick the oil is when your truck's motor is hot and running.
When you look at oil codes, remember smaller numbers identify thinner oils. These oils are ideal for use in car engines because they move freely and efficiently through the motor.

How often should you replace the oil on a 2005 Ford F150 5.4?

Ford recommends replacing the oil in your 2005 F150 5.4 every 5,000 miles. Or, if you prefer to track the time between oil changes in months, you should replace your oil at least once every six months
But you can't just change your oil every 5,000 miles and then forget about it—you'll also need to check your oil's level and condition regularly. When you inspect your F150's oil, look for these signs that it's time to replace it:
  • The oil is black or dark brown (clean oil looks like dark, amber-colored honey and is somewhat transparent)
  • Chunky, sludgy, or muddy oil
  • The oil is gritty or sandy
  • Your F150's engine is emitting foul odors, like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Your Ford's engine performance suddenly goes down
  • Your F150's motor is making odd or new noises, like knocking

How to change your 2005 Ford F150 5.4 oil and oil filter

When you're sure of your pickup's oil capacity and type, it's time to get your hands dirty and start changing it. You'll need the following tools and supplies:
  • A 16-millimeter socket and a ratchet wrench
  • Something to lift your F150, like a jack with jack stands or ramps
  • Fresh 5W-20 replacement oil
  • A torque wrench
  • A new oil filter
  • A towel or rag to clean any messes
  • A drain pan
  • An oil filter wrench
  • A funnel
Once you've got your supplies and tools ready, start your truck and let it idle for around five minutes. You don't have to perform this step, but doing so will heat the engine enough to cause the oil to drain more quickly. Once your F150's motor is warm, shut it off and follow the steps below.
  1. Remove the oil fill lid and pull up the dipstick (this step eliminates the vacuum, which makes the oil drain more rapidly).
  2. Crawl under your Ford F150 and uninstall the oil drain plug. Use the drain pan to catch the old oil that spills out.
  3. As the oil drains, remove the used oil filter.
  4. Lubricate the new filter by putting a thin layer of oil on its gasket before screwing it into place. Don't over-tighten the oil filter—turn it until it feels snug.
  5. Replace your truck's oil drain plug, and tighten it to 10 lb-ft using your torque wrench.
  6. Fill your 2005 Ford F15 with fresh 5W-20 motor oil.
Once these steps are complete, start your F150 one more time and run it for 30 seconds. Then, kill the engine and
check your oil using the dipstick
. Ensure that the oil level is within the correct range and secure the fill cap and dipstick before closing the hood.
Finally, you can recycle the old oil by transferring it into the new oil container and returning it to your local auto parts store or recycling hub.
