Is there a grace period for expired tags in Ohio?

I know you’re supposed to renew your tags in Ohio three months before they expire, but I kept forgetting and putting it off, and now they’re expired. Is there a grace period for expired tags in Ohio?

If your car is registered in
Ohio
, there is no grace period for expired tags in the state. To avoid paying a penalty or getting a ticket for expired tags, be sure to renew your tags within 90 days (approximately three months) before the expiration.
It should be easy to remember the expiration date, because it’s typically the driver’s date of birth. The documents you’ll need to bring to an
Ohio BMV
office are:
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license or State of Ohio ID card
  • Lease agreement and power of attorney documents if you’re leasing the vehicle
  • E-Check
    document if required
  • Signed Proof of Financial Responsibility certificate (a.k.a. proof of
    Ohio car insurance
    )
Once you’ve collected the appropriate forms, you’re ready to renew your tags. If they’ve been expired for 30 days or more, expect to pay a $10 late fee in addition to submitting the above documents.
