Is it legal to drive without shoes?

Relatively new driver here. I try to avoid wearing shoes as much as possible in my day-to-day, but I don’t know how that works in a car yet. Is it legal to drive without shoes?

Welcome to the road and good for you for double-checking the rules! Yes—driving without shoes is technically legal in the United States. It’s up to individual state legislation, but so far, most states don’t even mention driving without shoes, let alone have laws against it.
That being said, just because it’s legal doesn’t make it a good choice. Experts have the following
safety concerns
when it comes to driving without shoes:
  • Socks or bare feet make it easier for your foot to slip off the pedal.
  • Without proper footwear support, your feet are more prone to cramping and fatigue mid-drive
  • If you’re ever in an accident, your feet are completely unprotected from impact damage and glass shards or scrap metal
Even people who are used to going through life without footwear should reconsider when they’re getting ready to operate a vehicle. You can always keep a pair of shoes in your car designated for driving, just maybe consider getting some air fresheners, too!
