Is it illegal to block electric car spots?

I’ve noticed an electric car charging station was recently installed outside my workplace, but I recently saw a non-electric car parking in one of the charging station spots. Is it illegal to block electric car spots?

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon that EV drivers have pulled up to a charging station only to find an internal combustion engine car or ICE blocking their charging spot. This is sometimes referred to as ICEing.
While it is not illegal or prohibited everywhere, some areas have passed state and local “anti ICEing” EV parking laws to deter ICE drivers from taking up EV parking spots.
States that have Anti-ICEing laws include:
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Florida
  • Hawaii
  • Washington
  • Oregon
  • Illinois
  • Connecticut
  • Rhode Island
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • Colorado
  • Nevada
  • North Dakota
  • New York
  • Virginia
  • Maryland
Even if you don’t see your state on this list, the private company running the charging station or parking lot may still reserve the right to fine or remove any unauthorized vehicles parking in or blocking the charging spot.
Sometimes it’s just an honest mistake, but those parking tickets can seriously add up. Find out if you could be saving money on your car with
