In most cases, it is possible to get your own
car insurance
at 16. However, some states require a guardian or parent to grant legal permission. Other states require anyone who is 17 years old or younger to have a parent on everything, including: - Car titles
- Car registrations
- Car insurance
Additionally, if your parents own the vehicle you drive, you cannot insure it yourself.
If you want to own a vehicle and insure it, you need to check with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles to learn the requirements. But beware, anyone under the age of 25 is considered a higher risk to insurance companies.
An inexperienced driver usually pays three times the amount compared to someone over the age of 25. Even if you can insure your own vehicle, it’s typically much cheaper to be a part of someone else’s policy.
If you’re dead set on having your own insurance, make sure to shop around and see if you can get a better quote. Some places offer discounts for being a good student or for completing a
