I’m so sorry to hear you were injured in a car accident!
Calculating what the compensation amount is for pain and suffering from a car accident
is tricky because insurance providers don’t all subscribe to a set method to calculate this. Some companies use the Colossus system, which is a software program, to calculate these types of settlements. Other companies will evaluate pain and suffering using one of the following methods.
Multiplier method: The provider adds up financial damages and multiplies the sum by a number between 1.5 to 5. The number 1.5 is applied to minor injuries that do not require serious medical attention. Fives are characterized as extreme, catastrophic injuries.
For example, if you broke your arm and couldn’t work for one week, the insurer might rate this as 1.5. So, if the financial damages amounted to $8,000, the total payout would be $12,000.
Per diem method: This method uses a daily rate to determine the value of your pain and suffering. How much you make in a day is multiplied by how many days you suffered these injuries.
For example, if your annual salary was $48,000 and you made approximately $192 a day and suffered for three weeks, the insurance company would pay out around $4,032.
Hope that helps, and I wish you a speedy recovery!
