The state with the most acreage of national forest is actually Alaska, with 21.9 million acres, but
Idaho
follows close behind with 20.4 million acres. Idaho does hold the title for having the largest percentage of its land area—about 40%—set aside as national forest land. Idaho’s 20.4 million acres of national forest land are shared by seven forests:
- Boise National Forest
- Payette National Forest
- Salmon-Challis National Forest
- Sawtooth National Forest
- Caribou-Targhee National Forest
- Idaho Panhandle National Forest
- Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest
Besides its national forests, Idaho has 30 state parks. These areas of park and forest land preserve large swaths of the state’s forests, lakes, rivers, and mountains, as well as the native wildlife. The national forests in Idaho alone include 3,800 miles of wilderness trails and 4,900 miles of snow trails. These trails, among other state forest attractions, draw 6.6 million visitors per year, according to the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
