How much is the gas tax in Idaho?

Idaho's state gas tax jumped from a quarter per gallon to 32 cents on July 1, 2015. Gas for the average American car's 16-gallon tank costs an extra $1.28 due to this eight-cent difference. Since the last hike was in 1996, it's unlikely we'll see another one anytime soon.

Is gas tax relief on the way in Idaho?

Since June 2022, there’s been no word on a proposed six-month “gas tax holiday” for Idaho. Similarly, support for President Biden’s federal gas tax holiday appears to have dried up. Without gas taxes, Idaho residents could have saved about $8 per fill-up on the average, 16-gallon-carrying car—as it is, they’ll instead receive relief indirectly from
two tax rebates scheduled for 2022
.

How high are gas prices in Idaho?

It costs around 17.5% more to fill up a tank of gas in Idaho than in the rest of the country, at $4.423 per gallon.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the price of crude (the main ingredient in gasoline) has gone up. Even though it's since stabilized, the national average is still about 12% higher than it was in September 2021 at $3.765 per gallon. Meanwhile, Idahoans are paying 18% more for gas than they did last year.
Your hometown also affects how much money you pay for gas. Idaho's five most expensive metro areas for gas in September 2022 were:
  • Boise
: $4.448 per gallon (up $0.591 since last year)
  • Coeur D'Alene
: $4.414 per gallon (up $0.976 since last year)
  • Pocatello
: $4.387 per gallon (up $0.619 since last year)
  • Twin Falls
: $4.358 per gallon (up $0.499 since last year)
  • Lewiston
: $4.335 per gallon (up $0.928 since last year)
With these prices, Idaho is the 7th most expensive state for gas today. In comparison,
California
ranks first with $6.036 per gallon, while
Mississippi
comes in last with $3.068. AAA reports that two-thirds of Americans changed their driving habits in 2022, so it's safe to say that people across the country are feeling the pinch.
