How many BMW 8 Series models were made?

I’m a big fan of classic cars, so I’m trying to learn more about the history of all the bigger automakers out there. Right now I’m focusing my research on BMW. How many BMW 8 Series models were made?

That sounds like a fun research project! The
BMW
8 Series was introduced in 1990 under the E31 model code as a two-door coupe. This first generation lasted until 1999 with 30,621 units made up to that point. While initially popular at the start of the 1990s, the 8 Series was discontinued due to poor sales later that decade.
Fast forward to today, and the BMW 8 Series is back after a brief hiatus! The second generation of the 8 Series returned in 2018, and there are currently six 8 Series variants to choose from for the 2023 model year:
  • 8 Series Coupe
  • 8 Series Gran Coupe
  • 8 Series Convertible
  • M8 Competition Coupe
  • M8 Competition Gran Coupe
  • M8 Competition Convertible
