How long does electric car mechanic training take?

I’m a recent high school grad and I’m interested in becoming a car mechanic but since there’s a new wave of electric cars I’m wondering about training for EVs. How long does an electric car mechanic taking take?

Congratulations on graduating, and that’s a great career path! Electric car mechanic training is often a specification of general auto mechanic training. Due to the nature of the onsite training, you may be able to get an automotive technician diploma in 18 months but more in-depth training may take longer depending on the program.
While EVs have fewer components, they do have similar parts as traditional vehicles, however, some systems are specific to EVs only. While theoretical training is very important, the best type of training is on the job. Try to find an apprenticeship or internship program at a mechanic shop to learn some key skills that can’t be taught in a classroom.
In 2018, Tesla launched the 14 to 16 week
Tesla START program
with colleges which helps to train upcoming car technicians to work on Tesla cars. The company had internal training worldwide, but now Tesla Motors is partnering with schools so students can graduate certified to work on EVs.
