How long does a first car service take?

I’ve had my car for a few months, and I’m taking it in for its first service. How long does the first service generally take? I’m a bit tight on time and wondering if someone should pick me up.

Your first car service will usually take one to three hours—about the same duration as any other full service. A vehicle inspection is a necessary part of keeping your vehicle running in optimal condition. The technician will examine your vehicle’s features to assess its general roadworthiness and safety and to make any repairs where necessary.
You’ll typically have the following checked at a first inspection:
  • Mileage
  • History report of the vehicle
  • Tires
  • Engine
  • Undercarriage and leaks
  • Rust and discoloration
  • Lights
  • Handling
The mechanic may also perform an
oil change
,
tire rotation
, and an
air filter replacement
if needed.
Regular vehicle inspections are important because they help diagnose problems before they become serious and expensive. On a new car, problems are likely to be covered under warranty, but once your warranty expires, having regular inspections is critical to good car maintenance.
Generally, most cars should be serviced every six months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, this can vary depending on your vehicle’s make and model.
