How long does a careless driving citation stay on your record in Florida?

I’ve been applying for some courier jobs, and I’m worried that the careless driving ticket I got a few years ago will get in the way. How long does a careless driving ticket stay on your Florida driving record?

A
careless driving citation
will stay on your Florida driving record for 36 months.
Florida driver’s licenses operate on a
points system
. Points stay on your record for three years, so the points from a careless driving citation will affect you for three years after you pay the citation. For example, if you got a careless driving citation in November 2021, the points will remain on your record until November 2024.
However, if the points from your careless driving citation put you over the allowable point total, your license may be suspended. Here are Florida’s suspendable point totals and their resulting suspension:
  • 12 points in 12 months: 30-day suspension
  • 18 points in 18 months: Three-month suspension
  • 24 points in 36 months: One-year suspension
It’s important to note that careless driving is not the same as
reckless driving
. In Florida, reckless driving is a misdemeanor and stays on your record for 75 years.
The more points you earn, the more you will likely pay for
car insurance
. Driving safely and following the rules of the road is the best way to protect yourself, your passengers, and others while keeping your insurance costs low.
