How long does a car oil change take?

How long will I have to wait for my car to get an oil change? I just scheduled my first one, and I’m trying to decide if I should ask my girlfriend to pick me up while I wait for them to finish.

Oil changes may slow down your day, but they’re an essential part of any
basic maintenance schedule
. Generally speaking, an oil change will take 30 to 45 minutes. However, the actual wait time will depend on:
  • Your car,
  • your car’s condition, and
  • the line at your auto shop.
Before driving to the mechanic, call ahead and ask for a time estimate. If the wait seems too long, you can always try another day. Plus, if you go on a slow day, they might also be able to help with other routine tasks—like changing air filters, replacing wiper blades, or checking your fluid levels.
