How long does a car oil change take?

How long will I have to wait for my car to get an oil change? I just scheduled my first one, and I’m trying to decide if I should ask my girlfriend to pick me up while I wait for them to finish.

Oil changes may slow down your day, but they’re an essential part of any basic maintenance schedule. Generally speaking, an oil change will take 30 to 45 minutes. However, the actual wait time will depend on:
  • Your car,
  • your car’s condition, and
  • the line at your auto shop.
Before driving to the mechanic, call ahead and ask for a time estimate. If the wait seems too long, you can always try another day. Plus, if you go on a slow day, they might also be able to help with other routine tasks—like changing air filters, replacing wiper blades, or checking your fluid levels.
