How do you renew your driver's license in New Jersey?
When I went to pick up some wine from the store the other day, the cashier mentioned that my license is set to expire soon. This is my first time renewing, so I’m not sure what the process is. How do you renew your driver’s license in New Jersey?

New Jersey
online, in person, or by mail with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Under most circumstances, you can renew online. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Driver’s license number
- Social Security number
- Printer access
- A valid email address
- A valid credit card
Once you complete the application through the NJ MVC license/ID renewal portal, your new license is immediately effective. Carry the printed temporary license and your existing license with you while you wait for your new license to arrive by mail within 10 to 20 business days.
You might be sent a “Skip the Trip” notice by mail. All you have to do is complete the included renewal form, enclose your payment, and drop it in the mail. You’ll receive your new license within 10 business days.
If you are not eligible to renew online or by mail, you must renew in person at a Licensing Center. To renew in person, you’ll need:
- Proof of identity/date of birth
- Proof of New Jersey residency
- Proof of Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
- $24 fee payment
Once at the agency, you will fill out an auto license application, submit it along with your documents and fee, and have your photo taken. Your new license will be mailed to you.
