How do you put the Jeep Wrangler in neutral for towing?
We’ve decided to take a year off to explore the country in a camper, but we’ll be towing a vehicle for shorter trips. I need to get my Jeep Wrangler into neutral so that I can hook it up to our trailer. Can you tell me how to do it?

Here’s how to put your Jeep Wrangler in neutral so that it’s ready for towing:
- Ensure that the Wrangler is at a complete stop on level ground
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- If you have an automatic transmission, shift into neutral. If you have a manual transmission, press the clutch pedal
- Turn the engine off
- Shift the transfer case to neutral (N) if you’re in a manual
- Start the engine
- Shift the transmission to reverse (R)
- Release the brake pedal (and clutch if applicable) to ensure there is no movement
- Repeat the steps after “Start the engine” in Drive (automatic) or 1st gear (manual)
- Turn the engine off
- Apply the parking brake and shift to park
- Once you’ve hooked up the Wrangler to the RV, release the parking brake
