How do you open the gas tank on a 2012 BMW X5?

I recently purchased a 2012 BMW X5 but couldn’t find the fuel release lever inside of my car and now I'm running low on empty. How do you open the gas tank on a 2012 BMW X5?

The 2012
BMW X5
doesn’t have a fuel release lever inside the vehicle. In fact, no
BMW
models do! Here’s how to open the gas tank on your BMW X5:
  • Put your vehicle in park and turn off the engine
  • Get out of your vehicle and locate the fuel door on the rear
  • Press on the fuel door
After this, the fuel door should spring open. Just make sure your vehicle is unlocked when you do or you won’t be able to open it at all while locked. This added security measure prevents someone from potentially tampering with your fuel tank or stealing your gasoline.
Considering you are driving on an
empty tank of gas
, you should head to the nearest gas station to refuel as soon as possible to avoid being stranded.
Once there,
choose the best gasoline
to refuel your vehicle. While running your X5 on regular gasoline isn’t dangerous, BMW recommends using gasoline with an octane rating of 93 or higher for the best performance. That’s because premium gasoline contains additives for performance engines that aren’t found in regular unleaded gasoline.
Whatever you do, don’t put the wrong type of gasoline in your X5 or you’ll risk decreased fuel efficiency, sluggish performance, and even engine damage. Check your owner’s manual for the type of fuel your model year and trim level requires.
