How big is the gas tank on a 2022 BMW X5?

The 2022 BMW X5 has four trim levels:

M50i

sDrive40i

xDrive40i

xDrive45e

If you have an M50i, sDrive40i, or xDrive40, your gas tank capacity is 21.9 gallons or 82.9 liters. The xDrive45e has a capacity of 18.5 gallons or 70 liters.

xDrive40i

are essentially the same. Both sport a 3.0L six-cylinder engine that fetches up to 335 horsepower. The major difference is the xDrive40i has all-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive in the sDrive40i.

The

M50i

is a sport-tuned version of the X5 and prioritizes performance—it has 4.4L V8 that can produce up to 523 horsepower and includes all-wheel drive with other performance upgrades.

The xDrive45e is a plug-in hybrid with a six-cylinder engine (389 horsepower) and a battery tank which can get you an estimated 31 miles using the battery only.

How to check your 2022 BMW X5’s gas tank size

Check your owner’s manual

This is the most straightforward way of verifying your gas tank size. Search the table of contents or your “technical data” section of your owner’s manual to see your fuel tank’s volume.

Measure the gas tank

You can also physically measure the gas tank yourself. You’ll need a measuring tape and a calculator (unless you’re amazing at mental math).

Multiply the width, length, and height of the tank in inches, then divide by 231. This is how many cubic inches there are in a gallon, so your answer will come out in gallons.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

If you don’t want to fiddle around with a measuring tape, there is a riskier (and perhaps more fun) way. Drive until the tank gets as close to empty as possible, then fill up completely.

A good way to do this is to wait till you’re almost low. Then, drive around a gas station until your fuel gauge hits “E,” and return promptly to fill out. This isn’t exactly accurate, but it will give you a base estimate of how many gallons your tank takes.

Do not drive on empty for longer than necessary, as this could damage car components or leave you stranded somewhere.

How to save on fuel costs on an X5

The fuel efficiency on a 2022 X5 is fairly average. The M50i does 16 mpg for city driving and 22 mpg for highway driving. The sDrive40i and xDrive 40i average at 21 mpg for city driving and between 25-26 mpg for highway driving, depending on the trim.
