How do you look up old car insurance policies?

What’s the best way to look up old car insurance policies? I'm in the process of buying insurance, but my new company is asking for my old insurance policy. I don't remember what company I had or much about my coverage at the time.

“To look up old
car insurance
policies, there are a few things you can do.
First, most car insurance companies now send
policy documents
electronically. If you haven’t already, you should search through your email. You can search keywords like:
  • Car insurance
  • Insurance policy
  • Insurance
  • Policy renewal
  • Declaration
  • Policy number
If you can’t find any information that way, you could look through your phone to see if you downloaded the insurance company’s app. If you did, you should be able to log in to find your prior insurance information.
Beyond those options, you can reach out to your state’s DMV or secretary of state to see if they can search for your prior insurance information. Many states’ DMV websites allow you to search for insurance information online, as well.
If that doesn’t work, most car insurance companies pull reports that detail your prior insurance information. But if your new car insurance company is asking for your prior insurance information, they may not have been able to find it in their reporting. Either way, you’ll still be able to move forward with your new policy, but you may not receive any prior insurance discounts you were benefiting from.
Does your new car insurance premium seem high? If so, shop around for a lower rate. The
Jerry
app makes it easy. Choose from competitive quotes from up to 50 top insurance companies and Jerry takes care of the rest—securing your new policy and helping you cancel your old one. No long forms. No calling around. Just savings.”
