Mistakes happen, and fortunately, it’s fairly easy to fix a broken car key handle. You have two options: replace the housing or get a key cover.
Let’s start with the cheaper (and cooler) option: key cover. Auto parts stores sell key fob covers. These are plastic or leather covers to slide your key fob into. You can still press the buttons to access your car, and it protects the plastic–and your palms–from further damage. They come in cool colors and patterns, so it’s not only practical but also a fashion accessory.
You can find car key covers for anywhere from $10 to $50, depending on the style you choose.
If covers aren’t your thing, that’s ok. You can replace the casing of your car’s key fob. Since you have an older car, you can probably find a replacement fob case for about $20, but for newer cars, this can cost you close to $100. To replace the key fob housing, do the following:
Use a flat head screwdriver, credit card, or coin to separate the housing at the seam.
Ensure the new housing has the new button pad properly placed.
Carefully remove the circuit board from the old housing and attach it to the new housing.
Push the two pieces of the new housing together until you hear a snap.
