How do I find out what car insurance I have? I know laws can be different in each state, and I just moved to Illinois not too long ago.

To find out what car insurance company you’re with, there are a few things you can do:
  • Contact your secretary of state
  • Check your car
  • Search your financial statements
  • Look online
In Illinois, your main point of contact for vehicle-related issues is the Office of the Secretary of State. You can visit an office or give them a call to ask them about your insurance information. You’ll have to provide your driver’s license number and possibly other information about you or your car, as well.
You can also check your car for your insurance policy card or other forms of
proof of insurance
. You should have some insurance information in your car in case of an accident or traffic stop.
Alternatively, take a look at your bank statements to see where your insurance payments go each month. (If you opt to pay annually or bi-annually, you may have to look back further in your records.)
Check online by searching your email. You can also try logging into your insurance provider’s website to see if you set up an online account at one point.
Once you find your policy, take a look at your bills. Are you paying too much for the coverage you need? The
Jerry
app can help you find better rates. Just put your information into the app, and Jerry will show you the details of your current policy, give you other options, and help you switch if you find a better deal.
