How do toll roads work in California?

I’m going on a road trip through California. Where I live, there are no toll roads, so this will be my first time paying for them. I’m a bit anxious about it though. Can you tell me how toll roads work in California?

Don’t stress too much about toll roads. They’re fairly easy to navigate no matter where you are and aren’t different in
California
. In the Golden State, you have several options to pay for tolls:
  • Some, but not all, take cash or card.
  • Others are 100% electronic; these take a picture of your plate and send you a bill to the address associated with your license plate and registration.
  • FasTrak, a pass that you place on the windshield of your car. It’s for California residents only, however, if you know someone that lives there, they can add you as a temporary vehicle on the Fastrak pass.
Although it may take some extra navigation, avoiding toll roads altogether can save you some cash, especially if you have the time.
Since you’re going on a road trip, now is the perfect time to review your car insurance and compare quotes on the
