How do I travel with a car seat on a plane?

We’re going to visit my parents in Florida, and it’ll be our first time traveling with our six-month-old. I want to have her in a car seat on the plane—but I’m nervous about taking up extra space. How exactly do I travel with a car seat on a plane?

Flying with young children is always a little extra stressful—but no need to worry. You have a legal right to use a car seat for your daughter on the plane. Here is an outline of how to travel with a car seat:
  • Make sure the car seat is FAA-approved (most car seats sold in the US are). Note that for toddlers the seat must have a harness and can’t be a booster.
  • Buy a plane seat for your daughter if you can. If you can’t buy a separate seat, arrive at the gate early and explain that you need the extra space. The flight staff will try to accommodate you unless the flight is absolutely full.
  • Consider having a two-in-one stroller and car seat to make walking through the airport easier.
  • Arrive at the airport early and be prepared for security to take longer.
  • Arrive at the gate early with your belongings. Most airlines board families with small children early so you have extra space and time to set up the car seat.
To install the seat on the plane, follow these quick steps:
  1. Find the buckle path in the seat.
  2. Thread the long end of the airplane seatbelt through.
  3. Buckle the airplane seatbelt and pull the tail to tighten it around the car seat frame
If you need help with this process, a flight attendant will be glad to assist.
