How do I put a Jeep Grand Cherokee in neutral?

My newer-model Jeep Grand Cherokee isn’t working, but I can’t get it into neutral to move it and properly check the engine, battery, and other parts. How do you put a Jeep Grand Cherokee in neutral?

Car troubles are always frustrating, but checking out your car to diagnose the problem is a great idea. If the gear shift on your Jeep Cherokee won’t go into neutral, you’ll have to use the manual shift override to move the vehicle.
To put a Jeep Grand Cherokee in neutral via the override, here’s what you’ll need to do:
  1. Get into the driver’s seat and place your foot on the brake pedal
  2. Open the center console
  3. Toward the back of the center console, near the hinge, you’ll see a plastic cover
  4. Remove the cover
  5. Inside, there is an orange or red strap connected to a metal lever—this metal lever allows you to put the Grand Cherokee in neutral
  6. Pull up firmly on the strap until the metal lever is vertical and snaps in place
  7. While the lever is up, you can move the gear shift into neutral
  8. Once you move the vehicle, push the lever back down to put the vehicle back into park
For vehicles with Keyless Enter-N-Go, the process is slightly different. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
  1. Bring the vehicle to a stop and shift into park
  2. Turn the engine OFF
  3. Remove the Keyless Enter-N-Go button and use the key fob to complete these steps
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position, but don’t start the engine
  5. Press and hold the brake pedal with your foot
  6. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL
  7. Using the point of a ballpoint pen or a small pointy object, press and hold the recessed transfer case NEUTRAL button (found near the selector switch) for four seconds until the light behind the N symbol starts to blink
  8. When the light stops blinking (stays solid), the shift to NEUTRAL is complete
  9. Once you complete the shift and the NEUTRAL light stays on, release the NEUTRAL button
  10. Start your vehicle’s engine and shift the transmission into REVERSE
  11. Release the brake pedal for five seconds to ensure the vehicle doesn’t move
  12. Turn the engine OFF and apply the parking brake
  13. Shift the transmission into PARK and remove the key fob
