How many lumens are most car headlights?

What is the standard amount of lumens for a car’s headlights? I need to buy new ones, and I have no idea how strong they should be! Does the strength vary from car to car, or is the decision more about the owner’s preference?

Figuring out which parts you need for your car is tricky because the headlight aisle is packed with an endless sea of options! However, you essentially have three options with various lumens, or brightness:
  • Halogen headlights: 700 to 1,200 lumens
  • High-intensity discharge (HID) headlights: 3,000 to 5,500 lumens
  • LED headlights: 3,000 to 6,000 lumens
While dimmer, halogen headlights are far less expensive. HID and LED headlights offer much more brightness, but the added lumens come at a premium at the checkout counter.
Check your owner’s manual for any headlight specifications before you settle on your new bulbs. Your headlights are important for maintaining visibility at night, and using bulbs that aren’t bright enough for your vehicle is dangerous.
