How do I look up my car insurance?
My parents bought me a policy a few months ago. Since I'm taking over payments, I need to decide whether I can afford it or not. I'm not sure what company my insurance is with. How would I look it up?

is a big step in owning a car. Budgeting for insurance is also important, so looking into your payments is a smart move! Start by checking your car for your insurance card. Since most states require you to carry
proof of insurance
in your vehicle, you may have an ID card or declaration page there. If you do, this document lists your policy number and the name of your insurance.If you don’t see anything in your car, check your email. Most insurance companies now send documents electronically, so they may have communicated with you that way. Terms you can search are:
- Insurance policy
- Car insurance
- Policy number
Should nothing come up from that, see if your state’s DMV allows you to search insurance information. Because insurance companies report insurance information to the state, you can often access insurance information through the DMV.
If all else fails, ask your parents! I’m sure you want to be independent and find out the information yourself, but asking may save you a headache and time. Once you find out the cost of your insurance, shop around. Even if you can afford your current insurance company, looking at your options never hurts.
