How do I buy salvage cars directly from insurance companies?

I'm a sculptor, and I'm planning out a series of sculptures using only materials from salvage cars. A friend told me that sometimes, insurance companies will sell off their totaled cars for cheap, but I'm an artist, not a mechanic—I don't know where to start looking! How do I buy salvage cars directly from insurance companies?

So, your friend was partially right: insurance companies do sell off
salvage cars
, often for very low prices. However, they’re auctioned off at auto auctions or sold to salvage yards for parts, so you can’t buy salvage cars directly from the insurance company.
You can find materials from salvage cars by:
  • Researching nearby auto auctions
  • Calling tow yards
  • Checking local newspapers
  • Looking for salvage yards online
With a little old-fashioned sleuthing, you should still be able to buy salvage cars for very low prices. If you have another car, besides the ones you use for your sculptures, you can also find low prices on your regular auto insurance by using

Good luck with the search, and good luck with your piece!
