How do electric cars help the environment?
I get that electric cars don’t pollute the air with exhaust, but making electricity impacts the environment, too. Are EVs actually that much greener than regular cars?

It’s clear that you’ve really thought this through. Despite some concerns, research seems to agree electric cars are better for the environment than vehicles with internal-combustion engines.
Besides the obvious lack of emissions you pointed out earlier, the energy used by the car accessed through plugging into the electrical grid does far less damage to the environment than extracting and refining oil to turn into gas.
Even electricity created by burning coal has less impact per mile than the amount of gasoline used by a regular car. Only hybrids get you close enough for a serious debate.
One area of concern related to the effect of electric cars on the environment is how batteries will be handled once they don’t work properly anymore.
Recycling lithium-ion batteries can create significant air and water pollution, but innovations are being made to reuse them for storing electricity for the grid and cleaning up the recycling process.
Riding a bike or using public transportation is still better for the environment than driving an electric car, but if your lifestyle requires a motorized personal vehicle, you can’t go much greener than an EV.
