We’re sorry to hear you’re having difficulties with your ball joints! If you want to remove your ball joints at home without a press, you’ll need a floor jack, a hammer, safety glasses, a piece of wood, and a tuning fork.
It’s important to note that pressed-in ball joints require a press to be removed and installed, so if you don’t have a press, you should bring your car to a professional. If you don’t have pressed-in ball joints, you can follow these steps to remove your ball joints without a press:
  • Position your floor jack underneath your axle hub and take off the front wheel on the side you’re removing the ball joint from. You can place a piece of wood between the hub and the jack to prevent damage. Put your safety glasses on!
  • Identify the lower ball joint and begin hammering the bottom part from the top part to loosen your ball joint. The ball joint should come loose after a few hits. You may have to try different angles.
  • Locate the control arm and steering knuckle. Find the ball joint, wrap the tuning fork around the shaft, then strike the pommel end to release it. Be aware that using a tuning fork might harm the rubber boot on the ball joint, causing premature wear.
Carefully removing your ball joints is a great way to keep yourself protected on the roads, but the best way to make sure you’re covered is by signing up for great
