How can I find out whether a car is insured?

My cousin lent me a car this weekend while mine is in the shop. But he’s into some sketchy dealings, so I don’t feel entirely comfortable. How can I find out whether a car is insured?

The first thing you’ll want to do to find out if your cousin’s car is insured is search the vehicle for an insurance card. All drivers should have proof of insurance in their car at all times, so if the vehicle is insured, you’re likely to find appropriate documentation in the car.
Alternatively, you may be able to check with the police or DMV to find out if the car is insured. You’ll need to explain the situation and provide the following information:
  • The vehicle’s make, model, and year
  • The license plate number
  • The registration
However, be aware that the police and DMV may choose not to hand over your cousin’s insurance information if they feel like you do not have just cause to request it.
If you’re still unsure if the car is insured, you should not drive it. You could get into serious trouble driving
